Mosaic Handmade End-Grain Chopping Board
Handmade not Mass Made
This is a one-off geometric mosaic board put together in my Southern Highlands
workshop. It’s made by precisely fitting American Walnut and White Oak end-grain blocks to create a pattern that stands out on any bench-top.
Why I build them this way:
• End-grain is better for your knives: Instead of cutting across the wood grain,
your knife edge goes between the fibres. It keeps your blades sharper for much longer and stops the board from getting deep, ugly scars.
• Built to last: I use Titebond III glue because it’s the gold standard for food
safety and water resistance. It’s a solid, heavy board (3.4cm thick) that won’t slide around while you’re working.
• Natural Finish: I’ve finished this with food-grade mineral oil and a local
beeswax polish. No stains or chemicals—just the natural colour of the timber.
•
The Details:
• Timber: Walnut (dark) and Oak (light).
• Care: I’ll include a care sheet, so you know how to keep the timber
looking good for years.

Reviews
I specifically wanted a black walnut and cherry board in a mosaic pattern to use with my Japanese knives. Simon was great to deal with and kept me in the loop every step of the way. Not only does the board look spectacular, it has been made with great skill and attention to detail. It was very affordable considering the quality, included postage and some wax to protect the board. Above all, the sound my knives make when cutting on the board proves it is the real deal. Truly impressed!
